Urban distribution centre
About
The urban distribution centre is sited in a setting where one of the main problems of the city of Charleroi comes to the fore in exacerbated form: the clash between a scale that is specific to the infrastructures in place and one that is the product of the traditional urban fabric. The fairly elongated construction is surrounded by major infrastructures: the underground, the railways and the ring road. Viewed from a purely scenographic perspective, one might see tragic beauty in these constructions and come up with an architectural style around them that acts as an extension thereof. This site in particular is a gateway into the city of Charleroi. Which is why it is crucial for a bold architecture to be devised, as the site is currently a tract of wasteland. The initial brief is for a 2,000 m² hangar. The project as proposed consists of this hangar onto which an oversized structure has been added. The latter forms an extra layer that allows for the surface taken up by the building to be revived, from a land-take perspective. Formally, it is built around two beams of 200m in length that go all the way to the far end of the adjacent block.
