Description

I believe that we are missing out on the opportunity to exercise our profession as consciously as possible and to send out as clear a message as possible.
I believe that the exercise of our profession should prompt us to question our role, our courses of action, even our own objectives (do the objectives that we are set by the world around us reflect our role – are they the same?), the context of our work, its ins and outs, and, doubtlessly, at the end of the day, the very meaning of our work.
I sometimes believe that we spend more time talking about the obstacles and difficulties that hamper the development of architecture, and by the same token, validating them, than we do appreciating, persuading ourselves and building on the fact, spelled out above, that architecture has a capacity to transcend all the values of functionality, propriety and economy.
That is why I have recently come up with the notion of the conscious exercise of the profession, which strikes me as a way of determining and conveying its meaning.
